Black Chucks (or How I met the love of my life)

There is a lot about the beginnings of mine and Bruce's relationship that is fuzzy. For example, neither of us can recall the exact date it was the night that we first met. We aren't even in agreement over where or not it was a Thursday night or a Saturday night. (We've since agreed that it was the end of March, and adopted March 30th as our official dating anniversary.) I blame a lot of this on the fact that I'm so completely caught up in Bruce that most of my brain refuses to function normally.

But there are a few things that are crystal clear in my memory. The weather was warm enough to be comfortable sitting around outside but still cool enough to make having a fire a nice addition. My best friend Shantin and her daughter were staying with Shantin's dad's for a few days, who happened to live about a mile down the road from my own parents' house, where I was living. It was fairly late, and I had gotten Allie asleep and into bed when Shantin called and said her own daughter was in bed, and to please come over to sit by the fire pit and visit. I checked in with my mother (who is the best mother ever, by the way) to keep an eye on sleeping Allie, pulled on jeans, a long-sleeve black tee, and my worn black low-top Chucks.

I'm texting Shantin throughout this process, who at one point tells me that her dad and
(about our age, muscled) stepbrother are also hanging by the firepit. Until this point, I am completely unaware that she even has a (about our age, muscled) stepbrother, although, even though she's my best friend, isn't is as weird as you'd think. She has A LOT of stepbrothers and sisters. Plus, this one in particular had recently spent several years in Italy and one in Afghanistan. I didn't think much of this. I knew this wasn't a matchmaking attempt by Shantin. (Although she still apologizes that she never actually did think to hook us up!) Besides, I was not looking to date someone. I was just going to hang out by the fire and chat with my best friend.

I'll never forget the image of Bruce opening the front door to their house and coming down the stairs to join Shantin and I by the fire a few minutes after I arrived. He was wearing jeans, a fitted maroon t-shirt (which made the muscles in his sizable biceps and triceps look awesome...) , these kinda nerdy/incredibly sexy Ray-ban glasses, and worn black Chucks, identical to the ones on my own feet

He sat down across the fire from me, and Shantin's dad joined us outside. We all talked for hours, about what I can't exactly recall. I'm telling you, the man fries my brain. I remember talking about my job, his military career, my daughter-and later that night we all watched the movie Act of Valor. We would laugh as we took our shoes off to sit on the couch  downstairs and both our pairs of worn black Chucks were sitting there against the wall beside each other.

It would be another two weeks before we hung out again, and a couple of months before things actually became fairly serious between us, but even now, 10 months later, we joke that we initially were attracted to each other over our shared fashion choices. =)

Finish This....Week I

I stumbled across this today and decided it might be fun to participate. Check out the Finish This link up!

3. I get my money’s worth by- Wearing shoes until I absolutely cannot be seen wearing them in public anymore, or either my toes have literally worn a hole through the sole of the shoe.

4. On a scale of 1 to 10, my level of organization is-Maybe a 3? In the past, I haven't really been very organized AT ALL. But I'm improving daily. Mostly because of creating a Life Management Binder a lot like Kelsey’s HERE  .

My man's birthday

I like to joke around that Bruce is my hot younger boy-toy. In reality, he's only about a year and a half younger than me, but still.  He is definitely hot. =) Well anyway, his birthday was this past Sunday, and I was very excited as it was his first birthday with me!

The two of us were blessed to be able to go to stay on Saturday night in an adorable little wooden cabin at the gorgeous Monte Sano State Park, about an hour from our home. His sister and brother-in-law went with us, and we had a wonderful time walking through the park, enjoying the views from the lookout point, and watching some wild deer. Even if it was totally freezing outside! That night his sister made chili, I made cornbread, the guys built a fire, and we had fun celebrating! I look forward to sharing many more birthdays with this guy!

Mommy-Daughter Date

One of my goals this year is to make sure I spend enough quality mommy-daughter time with Allie, just us two. It's always been important to me for Bruce, Allie and I to do things together as a family, and we do that so much  now that it's become the normal state of our lives. We go to the park and walk, ride bikes, and play on the playground. We put together puzzles and read books curled up on a bean bag in her bedroom floor, all three of us. But, it's easy to forget that for a large portion of Allie's life, it was just me and her, against the world. We did everything together and she had almost all of my attention almost all the time. It's been an adjustment period for everyone having Bruce in our lives, and my relationship with him is so very important to me, but as our family evolves I want to make sure that Allie still always feels the love.

So, last night after gymnastics, which she attends one night each week, instead of rushing straight home so Bruce could come over and we could eat supper, she and I went to McDonald's and got her favorite-a Happy Meal- and a small ice cream cone. We hung out and talked and laughed and played with her Happy Meal toy on the table. It was a nice girl's night, and we had a lot of fun. Oh, and we took lots of selfies...

Cooking Sunday!

So yesterday Bruce and I did something that we hope is going to hit a few of the different areas we're trying to make some changes in this year. Our hopes are that this will help us eat healthier, save money, and stress less. We grocery shopped yesterday for the entire coming week, and prepared all our breakfasts, lunches, and planned out our dinners. I know there are a lot of people who have been doing this forever; who plan their meals out and shop for a month or so at a time. But for me, and the way I usually live my life, this is a big deal. This is progress, and I'm proud of it.

We spent about $60 (I'll have to sit down with Bruce and the receipts for an exact amount, but that's close), and I think that's going to be on the high end of what we should normally spend. However, since we're just starting out with this process, I think it will take a couple weeks to really streamline everything.

For breakfast, we bought a dozen eggs, a pound of turkey sausage, and a bag of shredded cheese that we used to make breakfast cupcakes to last us the entire week. We are really in love with these cupcakes, so we don't mind at all eating them every day.

We also bought two whole small chickens (on sale for $0.98 per lb. this week and so much cheaper than chicken any other way!) and got a few really good laughs about me getting all grossed out over having to stick my hand inside the chickens to pull the insides out. (It wasn't really that bad, but they thought it was funny!) We baked them in the oven and are having shredded chicken with brown rice and a vegetable each day for lunch. This week, we're having sweet potatoes on two separate days, zucchini one day, and green beans another day.

I'm super excited to have all these wonderful, healthy meals pre-made for this week so all we have to do it reach in and grab one for the day.

For dinner, we also bought a bag of tilapia filets and will be having tilapia and a vegetable a night or two, tilapia tacos one night, turkey sausage and rice one night, and baked chicken and spinach ravioli another night. (Ok, so the ravioli isn't healthy, like, at all, although I like to rationalize that it is- but I was craving it over the weekend, and had already bought the ingredients, so we have to go ahead and eat it!) But we wanted dinners that were quick and easy, so we don't spend a ton of time in the kitchen every night either.

In addition, we bought pineapple Greek yogurts for afternoon snacks and a few things for Allie's lunches at playschool. These mostly consist of a lunchable or cheese quesadilla, Princess apples, and sometimes yogurt. Oh, and a Capri-sun to drink, always. The kid is really easy to meal-plan for.

I'm really excited about this and hoping that it makes our lives a lot healthier, cheaper, and easier!

My Giant Water Jug

I am going to drink at least this much water today. I got this little gem at the Dollar General in town last week after seeing one of my co-workers with one before Christmas break, and I'm really excited about it. I know, excited about a giant water jug. But, it holds 8 full glasses of water; so, all the water a person needs to consume each day.

I'm making some big changes in 2014 in several different areas of my life. One of my goals for this year is to develop a body that I love. I've had a mostly hate relationship with my body for most of my life, with maybe a few periods of "somewhat like" thrown in here and there when my weight fluctuates. But, that's all about to change. For me, it's not about being skinny, or how much I weigh. I'm pretty sure that because of my genetics, I'm never going to be skinny; nor would I really want to be. I want to be fit, and healthy, and strong. I want to be able to wear whatever cute clothes I want, and feel like I look good in them. I want to be comfortable in my own skin.

One of the ways I'm going to accomplish this is by drinking more water, and this jug is going to help me do that. So each morning, I fill it up, and each night, it will be empty. And I'll just look so cool dragging the big ole' water jug around with me every day =)

*Also, the jug is BPA free, because that's very important these days!

Christmas Recap

Allie and I
With everything going on around the holidays and how busy it normally stays, it's very easy for Christmas to become a very stressful time for my family. This year, Bruce and I attended five family gatherings over a five day period with his family and mine-Allie attended a couple more, with having to spend time with her dad's family as well. However, this year I was determined for the holiday to be as stress-free as possible. Even though we stay really busy, I really wanted us to enjoy every moment. I feel like it was a wonderful Christmas. We got to spend lots of time with family and friends, we ate way to much delicious food, and Allie got more presents than is really necessary for a dozen children. I also got a few really cool gifts, including a Samsung Galaxy 3 tablet that I'm very excited about, from my amazing parents. Bruce was also so wonderful, right there by my side helping with gift wrapping and being "Santa." We had so much fun with that! Overall, I feel so blessed to have this life. Here are a few pictures of the last week:
